Today was part of the 1990's New Jack Swing movement. The group formed in 1988 by Frederick Lee "Bubba" Drakeford, Larry Singletary, Wesley Adams, and Larry McCain, childhood friends from Engelwood, New Jersey. They met Teddy Riley at an anti-drug benefit and it took off from there. He introduced them to Jheryl Busby (RIP), who was on his way out at MCA and brought them to Motown. Today was promoted at the new Four Tops. Why You Gettin' Funky On Me was released in 1991 and was featured in the movie House Party. It reached #2 on the R&B charts.

 

Groove On!

Switch is truly a classic R&B band. Formed in Mansfield, Ohio in 1974 under the name First Class, it featured brothers Bobby and Tommy DeBarge and Greg Williams, all of whom hailed from Grand Rapids, Michigan along with Akron, Ohio natives Phillip Ingram (brother of James Ingram), Eddie Fluellen and Jody Sims. As First Class they joined Barry White's group 'White Heat' as background musicians but were let go shortly thereafter. After that, they changed their name to Switch and were discovered by Jermaine Jackson who brought them to Motown Records. I Call Your Name was released in 1979 and peaked at #8 on the R&B chart. I love this song!

The song Infatuation by Jamie Foxx is probably obscure to most r&b music lovers. The single was on his debut album, Peep This, released in 1994. Jamie Foxx was at the height of his television comedic career with In Living Color and I think that people had a hard time taking him seriously as a musician even though he was classically trained. Peep This was a sales flop but eleven years later he released the chart topping album, Unpredictable.

Los Angeles Quartet Ambrosia is fused with symphonic art rock and slicky produced pop. They were discovered in 1971 by LA Philharmonic Conductor Zubin Mehta. I really like David Pack's voice and how he hits the high notes at the end of this song. Michael McDonald and James Ingram add the soul. Groove on!

I Can't Stand The Pain by Jason Weaver 1995. I'm not quite sure why this guy fell off the face of the earth because he had an amazing voice with heavy emotion. I am especially fond of this song because of the strong background vocals sung by Keith Crouch & Rahsaan Patterson. The good ole Motown 90's.
